Creative Updates: The Quest for Texture
In the last few months, I experimented a lot “behind the scenes”. From lino carving and fabric dyeing to endless experiments on the gel plate, I found myself really enjoying the tactile and textural element that I’ve always loved but was missing in my most recent art practice.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love vector art (especially for repeat patterns), but I really needed to reconnect with the more intuitive side of my creativity. It’s been a tough time health-wise and loosening up a bit really helped me to get through it.
If you follow my illustration journey on Instagram you might have probably noticed that, even in my digital practice, I am recently trying to do more raster, textural art and also share my art process more (I often forget to record the screen in Illustrator, thanks Procreate for the handy time lapses!).
Most importantly, I finally gave myself permission to start a completely new medium, hand felting, which I had wanted to try for a really long time. I am so glad I did, because I am loving it!
There’s something magical about choosing the colours, arranging them in their fluffy form and then starting the felting process and watching the fibers stiffen and intertwine and become a compact fabric.
My stash of wool is growing day after day and I don’t know where to put it anymore, but hey, at least I am using it, which is more than I’ve done with a lot of the stationery I’ve bought over the years ^^
I’ve kept my felting experiments offline so far, but I think it’s time to start sharing my creations with you all.
Can you guess what this photo belongs to?
I am planning to share some bird-themed creations soon as I am joining the Migratory May art challenge. Follow Nyel Design’s Instagram account to see them all!
